A Custom Metal Roof Transformation in Brewster, NY
Challenge
Mary, a homeowner in Brewster, NY, knew it was time to replace the section of her original cedar shake roofing. While the roof covering her porch had already been updated to metal, the main roof still had its 20-year-old wooden cedar shake shingles, now covered in moss and showing their age. The shingles were curling, moisture was beginning to settle in, and although there weren’t any leaks yet, she didn’t want to wait until problems started. But she didn’t just want any new roof, she wanted the classic look of shingles without compromising on strength or longevity. Not wanting to keep spending thousands of dollars replacing an old cedar shake roof every 20 years, she knew she needed something different.
After a frustrating experience with another metal roofing company, Mary was determined to work with a contractor she could trust. She had previously been dismissed by a pushy salesperson, who ignored her concerns, delivered a sloppy quote, and left her feeling like just another number. When it came time to finally finish the roof the right way, she turned to Klaus Larsen Roofing.
When going over the roof with Mary, we could see this wasn’t just any roof replacement. This would be a custom project involving the removal of old, moss-covered cedar shakes on a section of roof that was ready to be upgraded. The rest of the home had already been fitted with metal roofing, so Mary wanted the new system to blend and look like cedar, but be stronger and outshine the quality of what was already in place. On top of that, Mary’s home featured complex architectural elements: hipped and dormer sections, inside corners, and a stone-veneer chimney, all of which required planning and detailed flashing work. Mary also wanted the entire project done with care and minimal disruption to her day-to-day life and property. That meant protecting her beautifully maintained landscaping, working safely around a buried propane tank and multiple decks, and keeping an eye out for her 17 sheep and her dog, Lotti.
Klaus Larsen Roofing was up to the task!
Solution
After meeting with Mary, we knew we needed to create a solution that would work for this unique job. Mary decided to invest in a metal roof, not just for the beauty, but for the long-term benefits. With a Klaus Larsen lifetime warranty and unmatched strength, she won’t have to worry about replacing the roof again in 20 years, like a traditional shingled roof. Mary also didn’t settle for just any metal, she chose the ProVia Metal Shake in Saddlewood, a premium option that perfectly mimics the look of natural cedar shingles while delivering the durability of steel. This will give the classic style she loves, with the performance and peace of mind she needs.
During the process, our crew got to work by carefully stripping off the cedar shakes and evaluating the plywood beneath. We installed SealoronXT Deck Tape between the plywood seams to help seal out any moisture, followed by SealoronXT Ice & Water Shield in all vulnerable areas. Then we rolled out VeloraONE Roof Underlayment across the rest of the deck for added protection. We then applied the ProVia Shake Style Metal Roofing System in the color Saddlewood. This system features heavy-duty 26-gauge galvanized steel panels, engineered with an exclusive 4-way multi-point locking system for superior durability. The GalvaTec™ Kynar Finish System provides long-lasting color retention and protection from the elements, and the roof was finished with all necessary flashing details for a secure, weather-tight seal. Compared to replacing a shingle roof every 20–25 years, investing in a metal roof means fewer headaches and lower long-term costs. Mary wanted the classic looks of a shingled roof without sacrificing quality, which is why she chose this ProVia option, delivering the best of both worlds.
As part of the transformation, we installed four new Velux solar venting skylight systems that bring fresh air and natural light into the home. To protect the roof from the snow buildup that Mary was concerned about, we added approximately 155 ProGrip snow diverters. We also custom-built a chimney cricket and installed new flashing for the stone-veneer chimney.
To give this home extra protection from melting snow and heavy rain, at the rear of the house, we installed 20 feet of new 5" heavy-duty aluminum Seamless Gutters by Spectra in Musket Brown, matching the home’s exterior. These gutters come with a 20-year paint finish warranty that protects against blistering, flaking, chipping, cracking, peeling, splitting, rotting, and red rust. To enhance the performance of the new gutters, we installed Raindrop Gutter Protection. The Raindrop’s design allows it to adapt to nearly any roofline and will keep these gutters from clogging or sagging.
Since metal roofing takes longer to install than asphalt shingles, our crew remained dedicated on-site each day, working from morning until evening. A project manager was present throughout all three days to oversee the job, ensure quality, and make sure Mary’s concerns were addressed in real time.
Our team took extra care to avoid damaging Mary’s property. All materials and debris were staged on the left side of the driveway to keep the garage clear, and the crew remained mindful of nearby structures, landscaping, and animals throughout the project.
In just three days, we transformed the roof from aged and weathered to sharp and secure. The Saddlewood ProVia metal roofing perfectly complements the home’s style while offering decades of durability and weather resistance. The new skylights give the inside of the home natural light, and the snow diverters help protect against winter buildup.
Most importantly, Mary felt seen, heard, and respected throughout the entire process, something that had been missing from her past roofing experience. This wasn’t just a home improvement project, it was a fresh start. And it was done the Klaus Roofing Way.
